Viola Da Gamba for children

Ages 5 years and up
Duration:
16 weeks - 30 minute private lessons
7 weeks - 30 minute group ensemble classes
Instructor: Jane Hershey
The viola da gamba is an ideal instrument for children interested in playing a stringed instrument. A cross between the guitar and the cello, the viola da gamba comes in three sizes, frets, and is played with a bow. The music for the gamba centers on the Renaissance and Baroque, but there is a growing contemporary and folk repertory as well.
Rental from the Powers viola da gamba collection is available to students in this program free of charge." Right after first paragraph.
The Powers Viola da Gamba Collection, created by the founding director, Ellen Powers, is available to students in this program free of charge.
Critical to a student's success in this new viola da gamba program for children are:
1. parental participation at the student's lesson
2. parental involvement in student practice
3. attendance at group workshops (group participation is required)
During the workshops, students polish their repertoire and develop good
listening, music reading, and performance skills while expanding their ensemble awareness. Student workshops begin the third week of the semester and meet bi-weekly for 30 minutes.
