Steve Lipsitt Named Powers Youth Orchestra Director

BELMONT, MA – May 24, 2019

Powers Music School has named Bach, Beethoven, & Brahms Society of Boston Music Director Steven Lipsett as the new Director and Conductor of the Powers Youth Orchestra (PYO). Lipsitt will lead the entire orchestra program and conduct the PYO Chamber Orchestra.

Powers Executive Director Gavin Farrell and Director of Education & Community Programs Dr. Daniel Acsadi say Lipsitt’s warm demeanor, attention to detail, and ideas for growing the orchestra program distinguished him throughout the audition and interview process.

Says Farrell, “We are thrilled to have a conductor of Steven's caliber leading the Powers Youth Orchestra. Students will benefit greatly from his experience with preeminent ensembles in Boston and on stages throughout the world.”

Founded in 2013 as the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project, the orchestra program at Powers aims to teach musical, communicative, and personal skills to kids and teens to help them grow as musicians and as leaders. The smaller size of the orchestra groups allows students to receive individualized attention and coaching from conductors so no one feels lost in the crowd. The noncompetitive atmosphere is the perfect fit for students seeking a challenging but supportive orchestra environment.

Lipsitt, a conductor of opera, ballet, and music theatre, replaces Dr. Spencer Aston as PYO Director and Chamber Orchestra Conductor, leading students ages 12-18 and overseeing the program as a whole.

He is the founding conductor of the Bach, Beethoven, & Brahms Society of Boston, served as Music Director of the Boston Classical Orchestra for seventeen seasons (1999-2016), and conducted twenty performances of Carousel at the Kennedy Center Opera House. He has collaborated with Scottish Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, English National Opera, Boston Ballet, St. Louis Ballet, the Boston Music Theater Project, Boston Conservatory Opera Theatre, and Opera-at-Longy.

Dedicated to the training of young musicians, Steven Lipsitt has served on the conducting faculties of the Tanglewood Institute, New England Conservatory, the Hartt School of Music, Boston Conservatory, and Boston University, and has prepared student orchestras for Kurt Masur, Luciano Berio, Christoph von Dohnányi, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Gunther Schuller, and Leon Kirchner.

Lipsitt holds bachelors and masters degrees from Yale University. His training includes clarinet studies with the Boston Symphony’s Pasquale Cardillo and Yale’s Keith Wilson, vocal studies with Joan Heller and Phyllis Curtin, composition studies with Martin Bresnick and Jacob Druckman, and improvisation studies with John Mehegan.

Says Lipsitt about his new position, "I am delighted to join the Powers family, and look forward to sharing the thrill and beauty of orchestral music-making with as many young Belmont-area musicians as possible.”

Auditions for the Powers Youth Orchestra 2019-2020 season will be held on an ongoing basis from June to September. Wind, brass, string and percussion students ages 8-18 are invited to sign up for an audition slot by visiting the orchestra webpage. All details and audition requirements for the PYO Chamber, Preparatory, and String orchestras are available online.
