Auditions

Auditions will be held in the spring, fall, and on an ongoing basis. Use the button below to arrange an audition time with our conductors.

Audition requirements for MYSP Preparatory Orchestra:

  • Must be able to read music and have been playing for at least one year (typically studying at a level equivalent to Suzuki Book 3 or higher)
  • One 2-octave scale of your choice
  • Two contrasting pieces of your choice
  • Sight-reading

 

About the MYSP Preparatory Orchestra

The MYSP Preparatory Orchestra is a 15-20 member orchestra open to all beginner instrumentalists.

Suggested ages 9-13
Academic Year: Full-year, September - May
Time: Saturdays, 12:00-1:30 pm
Conductor: Will be announced this summer!

Tuition: $700, $30 audition fee (if not a current returning MYSP student)

Discounts/Scholarships: Any currently registered 2016/2017 MYSP students who do NOT plan to take private lessons at Powers next year are eligible for a $200 discount if registered/paid for MYSP by the last day of June 2017. If you DO plan to register for private lessons at Powers in addition to MYSP, please check our Merit Scholarship page for information about MYSP scholarships for chair positions and Conservatory Student scholarships!)

This orchestra aims to improve basic fundamental skills of string playing as well as helping students to acquire new skills such as 3rd position, martele, spiccato, and sight-reading in a creative and participatory environment. It is highly recommended that students participate in the MYSP Preparatory Orchestra to learn requisite skills for advancement into the MYSP Chamber Orchestra.

Recent repertoire includes:

Appalachian Suite by Douglas Wagner
Musette and Minuet by J.S. Bach
"Nimrod" from Variations on an Original Theme by Edward Elgar
"Main Title" from Star Wars by John Williams

 

MYSP 2016-2017 Performances

Please join the 2016-2017 MYSP orchestras as they present their winter, mid-year, and spring concerts!

  • Winter Concert: Sunday, December 18, 4:00 pm, at Cary Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington
  • Mid-Year Concert: Sunday, March 5, 4:00 pm, at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center, 51 Walden Street, Concord
  • Spring Concert: Sunday, May 21, 4:00 pm, at Arlington Town Hall, 730 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington

 

Audition process for new and returning MYSP students:

Students new to the MYSP program interested in joining the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project for the 2017-2018 academic year should complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an online audition form here to schedule an individual placement audition.
  2. Pay your audition fee of $30 per student.

  3. Once we have received your audition webform and audition fee, a staff member will contact you to schedule and confirm your audition time. Please read our audition requirements below to prepare for your audition.
  4. You will be notified of acceptance shortly after your audition. If accepted, please complete and submit your registration and tuition payment within two weeks of acceptance. Your payment will include the annual $40 registration fee, and full tuition for the MYSP program, unless a payment plan or two-semester installment plan has been arranged. Returning MYSP students who pay by the last day of June 2017 and do NOT plan to register for private lessons at Powers are eligible for a $200 returning student discount. Please check our Merit Scholarship page for information about MYSP scholarships for chair positions and Conservatory Student scholarships!
