MYSP Orchestra Auditions

Auditions will be held in May and June, and as needed on an ongoing basis.

Audition process for new and returning MYSP students:

Students new to the MYSP program interested in joining the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project for the 2017-2018 academic year should complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an online audition form here to schedule an individual placement audition.
  2. Pay your audition fee of $30 per student.
    To pay online: Click here to access ASAP, our online registration site (you will be asked to create an account). 
  3. Once we have received your audition webform and audition fee, a staff member will contact you to schedule and confirm your audition time. Please read our audition requirements below to prepare for your audition.
  4. You will be notified of acceptance shortly after your audition. If accepted, please complete and submit your registration and tuition payment within two weeks of acceptance. Your payment will include the annual $40 registration fee, and full tuition for the MYSP program, unless a payment plan or two-semester installment plan has been arranged. Returning MYSP students who pay by the last day of June 2017 and do NOT plan to register for private lessons at Powers are eligible for a $200 returning student discount. Please refer to our Ellen Huff Powers Merit Scholarship webpage for information about MYSP First Chair merit scholarships and Conservatory Student scholarships that you may be interested in.

    To register/pay by mail: Download and complete a 2017-2018 Registration Form, and a 2017-2018 Financial Aid Application if you are interested in applying for financial aid.

Current 2016-2017 MYSP students planning to continue for the 2017-2018 academic year should complete the following steps:

You may pre-register by downloading and sending in your 2017-2018 Registration Form, a $40 registration fee for the 2017-2018 year, plus full tuition payment, unless a payment plan or two-semester installment plan has been arranged. Returning MYSP students who pay by the last day of June 2017 and do NOT plan to register for private lessons at Powers are eligible for a $200 returning student discount. Please refer to our Ellen Huff Powers Merit Scholarship webpage for information about MYSP First Chair merit scholarships and Conservatory Student scholarships that you may be interested in.

Audition Requirements:

MYSP Preparatory String Orchestra audition requirements:

  • Must be able to read music and have been playing for at least one year (typically studying at a level equivalent to Suzuki Book 3 or higher)
  • One 2-octave scale of your choice
  • Two contrasting pieces of your choice
  • Sight-reading

MYSP Chamber Orchestra audition requirements:

Strings

  • All 3-octave major scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats
  • One 3-octave minor scale of your choice
  • Two contrasting solo pieces of your choice: One should be fast and technical. The other should be slow and lyrical. The pieces can be two movements from the same concerto or sonata, or they can be two entirely different pieces. Your solo selections should demonstrate your highest technical skills and knowledge of style, including shifting, articulation, and expression.
  • Sight-reading

Woodwinds / Brass

  • All major scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats (1 or 2 octaves, depending on applicant's range)
  • One minor scale of your choice (1 or 2 octaves, depending on applicant's range)
  • Two contrasting solo pieces of your choice: One should be fast and technical. The other should be slow and lyrical. The pieces can be two movements from the same concerto or sonata, or they can be two entirely different pieces. Your solo selections should demonstrate your highest technical skills and knowledge of style, including shifting, articulation, and expression.
  • Sight-reading

Percussion

  • One solo piece on mallets
  • One solo piece on timpani (drums are provided for audition)
