Powers Music School Announces New Executive Director

Belmont, MA – May 25, 2017

The Board of Directors of Powers Music School in Belmont, Massachusetts announces the appointment of Gavin Farrell as the new Executive Director, effective in early August. Farrell succeeds Helen Clapp Stevenson, who announced her retirement this past fall.

Julie Holland Mortimer, chair of the search committee, said Powers conducted a nationwide search for the new Executive Director, assisted by the search firm Arts Consulting Group.

Says Mortimer, “Our search committee had the privilege of meeting a remarkably impressive group of candidates. We were very enthusiastic about Gavin, and are thrilled to have him as the new Executive Director. We know that the entire Powers community will benefit enormously from his thoughtful, sincere, and positive leadership.”

Ernest Sabine, Powers Music School’s Board President, agreed. “We are delighted to welcome Gavin Farrell to Powers. He brings an outstanding record of energized and inspired leadership, and we look forward to engaging with him to enhance the benefits that Powers brings to the greater community. Under Gavin's leadership, Powers will continue as a wonderful place to play, where everyone has the ability to enjoy, create and develop a lasting love of music.”

Mr. Farrell, a champion of music and arts in the community, brings 18 years of experience to Powers and a wide array of skills pertinent to a community music school. He previously served for two years as Executive Director of the Peabody Institute's Preparatory Division in Baltimore, Maryland. He held several other positions at Peabody, including Interim Executive Director of the Preparatory Division and Academic Services Administrator, and was also a member of the faculty teaching music theory. His teaching experience, coupled with his experience in financial management, program development, organization and operations, have prepared him well for his new position at Powers.

At the Peabody Institute, Mr. Farrell was instrumental in developing Pathways to Peabody, a program funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to support Preparatory attendance of high-achieving, low-income students. He also played a key role in the Peabody Community Chorus at the Henderson-Hopkins School and worked with Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth to create Mastering the Fundamentals of Music, an on-line music theory course.

Mr. Farrell received his BM in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and holds an MM in Percussion and Music Theory Pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory.

Says Farrell, “Powers has a thoughtful, creative faculty and staff, and a deeply committed Board of Directors. I'm excited to lead such a talented group of individuals as we work together to strengthen Powers’ ties to the community and build a strong future for the school.”
