Help us make our 50th Anniversary year the best yet!
49 years ago, the Music Committee of the Belmont Community Center sponsored Belmont's first Piano Festival and enrolled 12 recorder students. This past year, with the same heart and spirit of the original founders, Powers Music School touched the lives of more than 1,000 students.
In 2014, as Powers Music School celebrates its 50th Anniversary, we want to bring the joy of music to the lives of 1000 more students through private lessons, early childhood and group classes, recitals and competitions, and a full orchestra and ensemble program.
The founding principles, that all students are entitled to high quality musical instruction and that music is an essential part of our lives, continue to guide the School today. Our classes and lessons help students learn critical thinking and fine motor skills, build self-confidence, work on a team, devote themselves to their passion, excel in school and in life, laugh, and become the people they are meant to be.
But we need your help to help them.
We have big plans for the upcoming 2013-2014 year, and we are so close to our goal, but are still $6,000 short of making our budget. Tuition alone cannot support all of our efforts.
If every Powers family donated or increased their donation just $10 this month (less than the price of a movie ticket!), we could launch the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project orchestra program and expand our ensembles to empower children and teens, provide financial aid to those without access to music education, and plan a full season of community events and performances to bring music to our neighbors and friends.
From all of us at Powers Music School, THANK YOU.
You are an important part of the Powers family, and your generosity helps us change lives. We look forward to sharing our music with you soon!

How is Powers Music School making a difference?
Our students say it best:
Graduating senior, piano
"It only seemed like yesterday that I began to play the piano in 2nd grade with Veda Kogan. Piano has been an extremely positive influence in my life through her mentoring: reducing my stress, keeping me happy, but more importantly helping me enjoy music. I really appreciate the love and care I received from Veda Kogan, Helen Clapp Stevenson, and all who have helped me along my musical journey. I will never forget the memories I had here."
Graduating senior, pennywhistle/piano/recorder
“I will be starting at Harvard next fall. I definitely hope to continue music, maybe with the pennywhistle in a band, maybe in a chorus. I like the diversity of instruments that are available; each recital always has something different. Putting together my senior recital has definitely been an interesting experience; it has been fun to look at all the pieces I've played during my time at Powers.”
Graduating senior, piano
“I will be going to Worcester Polytechnic University to study engineering. But I will still play the piano. I am proud of coming this far, and being able to play in front of people. Playing music is something I enjoy and it is nice to share it with others.”
Graduating senior, guitar
“My favorite part of Powers is how knowledgeable and enthusiastic all the instructors are. I've taken guitar lessons from three different instructors over the past four years, and they were all very helpful. I will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall, and I intend to continue studying guitar and piano.”
