David Stevens

Clarinet, Saxophone

A native of California, David is a multifaceted musician. Now a resident of Boston, he currently splits his time as an educator, performer, theorist, and music administrator.

As a saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist, he is active in classical, musical theatre, jazz, rock, and improvisation. As a classical musician, he has performed with groups as diverse as the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), ALEA III, Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, Hub New Music, and the Navy Band East.

David is an ardent educator and has been teaching woodwinds (saxophone, clarinet, and flute) since 2005 as a group and private instructor. In addition to Powers Music School, he is on faculty at All Newton Music School, Stage Music Center in Winchester, and Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, and has also performed educational outreach with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, North End Music and Performing Arts Center, and the Boston Philharmonic’s Crescendo! Program. David also has extensive experience in ensemble management, concert production, and composer assistance for a variety of organizations. He is currently an events office administrator in the Music and Theater Arts Department at MIT.

In 2015, David was the live-in Musical Assistant to Gunther Schuller. Gunther became a mentor, a teacher, and a friend, and he continues to promote his work as a performer, lecturer, and theorist. David holds a Bachelor's degree in music from California State University, Fullerton, where he was a President’s Scholar and graduated summa cum laude (2013), and a Double Masters Degree in Saxophone Performance and Music Theory from New England Conservatory (2016).
