Press Release: 3/29/2007Spaces Still Available in Pow-Wow Summer Program Each summer, Powers Music School in Belmont Center offers a music theatre program for children called Pow-Wow. Now in its 14th season, the program has gained popularity over the years as an educational and creative oasis for children during the summer months. On the opening day for registration, parents were lined up outside the school at 6:00 am and, by 8:00 am, one of the program's four sessions was sold out. "The success of the program speaks for itself in the number of students returning each year," said Jane Parkhouse, Co-Artistic Director of Pow-Wow. Each of Pow-Wow's four sessions last two weeks. Although Session 2 and 3 are sold out, spaces remain in sessions one and four. Session I: June 25 - July 6; Session 4: August 6 - August 17. The objective of each Pow-Wow session is to produce an operetta created by the program's two artistic directors, Jane Parkhouse and Yas Ishibashi. During each session, Pow-Wow students, ages 5 to 11, are given piano and violin lessons, as well as group singing and movement classes. Students are supervised in designing scenery and simple costumes for the performance in arts and crafts classes. Pow-Wow also offers a Counselor in Training, or CIT, program for students ages 12 to 14. CITs assist the younger students during classes and perform with the students in the operetta. Pow-Wow takes place at Powers Music School, located at 380 Concord Avenue. Powers Music School, now celebrating its 44th year, is a non-profit community music school in Belmont.
