2nd Annual Peter Elvins Vocal Competition
Created in the memory of long-time Powers voice faculty Peter Elvins, this competition is open to vocal students ages 15 and above. The winners for each division will be awarded a cash prize. The winner of the Classical/ Opera Division will also be given the opportunity to perform a solo with Belmont Open Sings on February 11, 2007. Peter took tremendous pride in his students' growth and accomplishments as musicians. His legacy of passion for music and teaching lives on in this vocal competition.

The competition will be split into two categories: 1) the High School Division for high school students and 2) the Classical/Opera Division for college level ages and above.

Applications must include an official application form, proof of age and citizenship, CD or audiocassette, registration fee (payable by check or money order to Powers Music School), and must be postmarked by December 1, 2006. Only the first 100 applicants for each division will be considered. All application fees received beyond the first 100 will be refunded. Tapes/CDs will not be returned.

Power's Musical Story Hour Presents

The Nutcracker

Appropriate for all ages, including infants.
Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver

Join Helen Clapp Stevenson, Executive and Artistic Director of Powers Music School, as she narrates this series of free musical story hours for the community. Each story hour will include great music and an age-appropriate story as well as an exploration of instruments. Children ages birth to 5 years old are welcome to come with their parents/caregivers to enjoy this great interactive program that is held on select Fridays during the school year.

December's Musical Story Hour will be The Nutcracker.

Additional Musical Story Hours take place on February 2, 2007, and March 2, 2007. Stories for these dates are to be announced. Enrollment is limited and early registration is required.

Family Drum Jam

Parents and kids of any age may come to this informal class. No experience necessary. Drums and percussion will be available to play. Learn how to produce the three basic sounds of the drum (tone, slap, and bass), and how to play claves, shakers, bells, and other percussion instruments. Sing songs, dance, improvise and learn simple beats you can try at home with your family.

Additional Drum Jams take place on January 21, February 11 and March 11.

Enrollment is limited and early registration is required.

Once Upon a Time...Music and Stories Presents: Cinderella

Belmont Open Sings

Powers Music School Presents, Belmont Open Sings, with Mary Beekman as Artistic Director. Participants join in performances of the great masterworks for chorus and orchestra. Belmont Open Sings provides the public with the opportunity to sing while accompanied by a professional-level orchestra, and enjoy arias sung by some of Boston's finest soloists, led by Mary Beekman.

Join us December 17th at 7:30 for Handel's Messiah

Individual concert tickets cost $7 per person (All ages).

Also join us on Sunday February 11, 2007 for Mozart's Mass in C minor at 7:30 pm

Concerts take place at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont. Take the #73 bus line from Harvard Square and/or Waverley Square. Traditionally, those who have cars have provided rides to Harvard Square, Boston and other areas to participants.
