Belmont Open Sings 2006-2007
Powers Music School Presents, Belmont Open Sings 2006-2007 season, with Mary Beekman as Artistic Director. Participants join in performances of the great masterworks for chorus and orchestra. Belmont Open Sings provides the public with the opportunity to sing while accompanied by a professional-level orchestra, and enjoy arias sung by some of Boston's finest soloists, led by Mary Beekman. Concert times are Sundays, 7:30 pm. October 15, 2006, Faur‚, Requiem and Pavane; December 17, 2006, Handel, Messiah; February 11, 2007 Mozart, Mass in C minor. Concerts take place at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont. Take the #73 bus line from Harvard Square and/or Waverley Square. Traditionally, return rides to Harvard Square, Boston and other areas have been provided to participants by those who have cars.

Powers Music School Ensemble Program: The Powers Music School will be forming chamber music ensembles this fall. Intermediate to advanced musicians, ages 9 and up to adults, are encouraged to join the program and experience the joy of making music with a group of like-minded players. Ensembles will meet weekly with an experienced coach, and will perform twice during the year, including at the Stein Chamber Music Festival on March 10th, 2007. Ensembles range from Chamber Music for strings, piano, winds and brass instruments, Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, the Powers Jazz Ensemble and the Powers Rock Group. Auditions will be held from 3pm-5pm on Saturdays, Sept. 30 and Oct. 14, 2006, and Sunday, October 8th, 2006. Viola da Gamba Program for Children: The viola da gamba is an ideal instrument for children interested in playing a stringed instrument. A cross between the guitar and the cello, the viola da gamba comes in three sizes and frets and it is played with a bow. The music for the gamba centers on the Renaissance and Baroque, but there is a growing contemporary and folk repertory as well. The new viola da gamba program includes attendance at group workshops. During the workshops, students polish their repertoire and develop good listening, music reading, and performance skills while expanding their ensemble awareness. Student workshops begin the third week of the semester and meet bi-weekly for 30 minutes. Powers Broadway Singers: A Vocal Performance Program: This group program offers individual and group performance experience for ages 13 and up. The class will focus specifically on audition and stage technique. The class performs scenes and selections from Broadway Shows spanning the past 100 years. At the end of the semester, students perform in a "Broadway Review," showcasing solos, duets, and ensembles.
Class meets Saturdays 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Auditions are September 16, 1-2:30pm.
Auditions consist of one prepared piece, students without a prepared piece will be assigned one by the instructor.
