Powers Music School Announces New Viola da Gamba Program for Children
The viola da gamba is an ideal instrument for children interested in playing a stringed instrument. A cross between the guitar and the cello, the viola da gamba comes in three sizes and frets and it is played with a bow. The music for the gamba centers on the Renaissance and Baroque, but there is a growing contemporary and folk repertory as well. The new viola da gamba program includes attendance at group workshops. During the workshops, students polish their repertoire and develop good listening, music reading, and performance skills while expanding their ensemble awareness. Student workshops begin the third week of the semester and meet bi-weekly for 30 minutes. Powers Music School has an extensive collection of viols available Rental from the Powers viola da gamba collection is available to students in this program free of charge. Fall Classes begin September 7. For more information or to request the 2006/2007 catalogue, contact Powers Music School, 617-484-4696, or visit www.powersmusic.org.
