Powers is pleased to announce our first Piano Concerto Competition!
The 2017 Competition Piece is:
Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K.491 (I. Allegro) by Mozart
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Received by Wednesday, March 1, 2017
1st Place: $350, perform 2 movements of the selected piece with the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project at Powers (MYSP) Chamber Orchestra in their Spring Concert on May 21!
2nd Place: $150, perform 1 movement of the selected piece with the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project at Powers (MYSP) Chamber Orchestra in their Spring Concert on May 21!

How does the competition work?
Applicants in grades 12 and under may record a live video of themselves performing the selected competition piece and upload their videos to Youtube. Finalists will be chosen in mid March, and will perform the selected piece in person for adjudicators in the Finals Round on April 7th. The 1st and 2nd Place winners will receive cash prizes and will perform movements from the selected piece with the MYSP Chamber Orchestra at the Spring Concert on May 21.
Finals Round: Friday, April 7, 2017 at 7:30 pm, All Saints' Church, 17 Clark Street, Belmont
Notification: Teachers will be notified if their student has been chosen for the Finals Round by March 13th.
Winners Announced: Week of April 10-15
Notification: 1st and 2nd Place winners will be notified by phone and email, and announced on the Powers website and through email during the week of April 10-15. Cash prizes will be awarded following the winners’ performances at the MYSP Spring Concert on May 21. Powers reserves the right to not select a winner.
MYSP Spring Concert: Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 4:00 pm, Arlington Town Hall, 730 Mass. Ave.
Performance & Attendance: The competition 1st Place winner will perform 2 movements of the selected piece with the MYSP Chamber Orchestra, and the 2nd Place winner will perform 1 movement. Rehearsal times are listed above – attendance is necessary at all rehearsals. In case of illness or injury, both winners should be prepared to perform all 3 movements.
All competition applicants must be available on the following dates!
Friday, April 7 (Finals Round), Week of April 10-15 (announcement of winners), Sunday, May 21 (MYSP Spring Concert). The 1st and 2nd Place competition winners will rehearse with the MYSP Chamber Orchestra on 4/15: 3-5pm; 4/29: 3-5pm; 5/6: 3-5pm; 5/13: 3-5pm; 5/20: 3-5pm.

Application Form & Entrance Fee: Please fill out the application form in its entirety and make your $25.00 check payable to Powers Music School. No refunds are available in case of withdrawal or no-show at the Finals Round. (The competition entrance fee will also cover the Mildred Freiberg Piano Festival application fee if any student wishes to participate in the Festival as well.)
Youtube Entry: Competitors must include in your application an active link to a YouTube video recording of this year’s selection (listed above). Please triple-check the spelling of the link and make sure it loads and plays properly on several different devices! To shorten and simplify your Youtube link, try Tinyurl.com or Bitly.com.
STUDENTS: Submit your application form, link to your Youtube video recording, and payment to your teacher. All competition rules and guidelines are here, and also included on the application. Please read them carefully.
PIANO TEACHERS: Print and complete an application for your student here.
