Auditions will be held in the spring, fall, and on an ongoing basis. Use the button below to arrange an audition time with our conductors.

Audition requirements for MYSP Chamber Orchestra:

Strings

  • 3 octave major scale through 4 sharps and 4 flats
  • 3 octave minor scale of your choice
  • 2 contrasting pieces of your choice: One should be fast and technical. The other should be slow and lyrical. The pieces can be two movements from the same concerto or sonata, or they can be two entirely different pieces.
  • Sight-reading

Woodwinds / Brass

  • 2 octave major scale through 4 sharps and 4 flats
  • 3 octave minor scale of your choice

Percussion

  • 1 piece on mallets
  • 1 piece on timpani



About the MYSP Chamber Orchestra

The MYSP Chamber Orchestra is a 25-30 member ensemble led by conductor, trumpeter, and educator Dr. Spencer Aston, and is open to strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instrumentalists ages 12-18. Placement is by audition and is based on a student's current playing level.

Ages 12-18
Academic Year: Full-year, September to May
Time: Saturdays, 3:00-5:00 pm
Conductor: Dr. Spencer Aston
Tuition: $800 (Please see our Music Immersion Packages page for discounts!)

(2015-2016 MYSP students registered by June 6, 2016 are eligible to receive a $200 MYSP continuing student discount off of their tuiiton payment! No other additional orchestra discounts will apply. Students new to the MYSP program are not eligible.)

MYSP Chamber Orchestra members will benefit through participation in a smaller orchestra, requiring each individual member to be responsible for achieving mastery of their part at a level not always attained in a larger orchestra setting. Students will grow as musicians through development of musical elements such as rhythmic precision, intonation, and common ensemble performance practices.

Orchestra members can expect to explore chamber orchestra masterworks of the late 18th century through more recent works written by contemporary composers. Past repertoire examples include:

Overture to Le Nozze di Figaro by W.A. Mozart
Symphony No 94 "The Surprise" by F.J. Haydn
Libertango by Astor Piazzolla
Symphony No. 3 “Eroica" by L.v Beethoven

 

MYSP 2016-2017 Performances

Please join the 2016-2017 MYSP orchestras as they present their winter, mid-year, and spring concerts!

  • Winter Concert: Sunday, December 18, 4:00 pm, at Cary Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington
  • Mid-Year Concert: Sunday, March 5, 4:00 pm, at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center, 51 Walden Street, Concord
  • Spring Concert: Sunday, May 21, 4:00 pm, at Arlington Town Hall, 730 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington

 

Audition & Registration process for new and returning MYSP students:

Students interested in joining the Massachusetts Youth Symphony Project for the 2016-2017 academic year, or 2015-2016 MYSP students hoping to move up to the next level of MYSP should complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an online audition form here to schedule an individual placement audition.
  2. Pay your audition fee of $30 per student (waived for current Powers students who have paid their 2016-2017 annual registration fee).
    To pay online: Click here to access ASAP, our online registration site (you will be asked to create an account).
    To pay by check: Checks, made payable to Powers Music School, should be sent to Powers Music School, P.O. Box 398, Belmont, MA 02478. You may also pay by credit card by calling (617) 484-4696.
  3. Once we have received your audition webform and audition fee, a staff member will contact you to schedule and confirm your audition time. Please read our audition requirements below to prepare for your audition.
  4. You will be notified of acceptance shortly after your audition. If accepted, please complete and submit your registration and tuition payment within two weeks of acceptance. For those auditioning in the spring for the following year, your payment will include a $40 annual registration fee for the following year, and you may choose to pay tuition in full, or in two installments with the second installment due in August, unless a payment plan has been arranged. (Please note: There are no refunds for group programs. Choosing to pay in two installments does not release you from your financial obligation for the second installment should you need to withdraw from the MYSP program for any reason, and there is no refund for the first installment.) For those auditioning after the fiscal year has begun, your payment will include the annual $40 registration fee, and full tuition for the MYSP program, unless a payment plan has been arranged.

    To register/pay by mail: Download and complete a 2016-2017 Registration Form, and a 2016-2017 Financial Aid Application if you are interested in applying for financial aid. If you are paying in installments, your first installment will be $300, plus the $40 annual registration fee.

2015-2016 MYSP students planning to continue in the same level of MYSP for the 2016-2017 academic year should complete the following steps:

  1. You may pre-register by downloading and sending in your 2016-2017 Registration Form, a $40 registration fee for the 2016-2017 year, plus tuition payment. You may choose to pay tuition in full, or in two installments with the second installment due in August, unless a payment plan has been arranged. (Please note: There are no refunds for group programs. Choosing to pay in two installments does not release you from your financial obligation for the second installment should you need to withdraw from the MYSP program for any reason, and there is no refund for the first installment.)
